Who?
I'm Jacob Sam-La Rose - poet, educator, artistic director, creative consultant, tech consultant, editor, and photographer. When read on a screen/page, the name can be a little confusing. My mother is a Sam, my father was a La Rose, and they gave me the gift of a hyphen. I have a few basic passions - poetry, photography, and (web) technology. I'm also passionate about building communities.
What?
I've been published in a number of anthologies and journals, including Penguin's Poems For Love, City State: New London Poetry, and Michael Rosen's A-Z of the Best Children's Poetry. Beyond my own writing, I run workshops and workshop programmes in schools and other institutions. I've worked with the Barbican, the National Theatre, Arvon and Glyndebourne, to name-drop a few. I run INSETS for teachers, and professional development programmes for poets and writers. Through the British Council, I've run workshops and seminars at Botswana University and for the Ministry of Education in Malaysia, and I helped to establish the first youth SLAM programme in Finland. I've been the Artistic Director of the London Teenage Poetry SLAM since 2003. I ran the FYI mailing list for poets and people interested in poetry between 1999 and 2009. In 2008, I started The Shadow Cabinet- an initiative to pair emerging literature in education artists with an established professional in the sector, now entering its third year. I've built websites for a range of literature development organisations and artists, and I occasionally provide tech and productivity consultancy. I like to keep busy.
